“The blockbuster-to-be “Men in Black III” hits theaters May 25, but fans already have a theme song to the movie in Pitbull’s single “Back in Time.” The superstar told us at the Billboard Latin Music Conference that he has embraced the opportunity to be a part of the film, and is looking to Will Smith as a “blueprint” on how to transition from music to the big screen and beyond.
“It’s an honor, it’s a blessing. More than a movie, it’s a business, it’s a franchise,” Pitbull told Billboard. “So to be able to study what they’ve got going on… I was down in Cancun for the upfront, with Will (Smith), Josh (Brolin), with Tommy (Lee Jones) being an amazing actor. I’m not only studying the franchise, I’m also studying Will.”
Pitbull goes on, calling Will the “blueprint of being someone who went from music to movies, and movies to being an entrepreneur.”
“Back in Time” is fast climbing the Hot 100, ratcheting up to No. 65 from 83 last week and landing at No. 23 on Pop Songs. “It looks like it’ll be a top 10 record within a couple weeks, with God’s help,” he said.
After “Back in Time” runs its course, Pitbull tells us he’ll release “Get It Started,” a collaboration with Shakira. This summer, he’ll unleash his seventh album, “Global Warming,” a title he explains is because “we’ve been here for years, which is the same thing” as climate change.
Earlier at the Billboard Latin Music Conference, Pitbull touched on legal battles with former label TVT, his multiple branding deals, and his ascent to becoming the global superstar that he is today, based on the premise that the music industry is “90 percent business, 10 percent talent.”
