All I Want for Christmas Is You” allegedly began with a disagreement between Mariah Carey and her ex-husband and then-Sony Music head Tommy Mottola—he wanted the songstress to record a holiday album and she thought she was too young. With three albums under her belt at that point, ‘Mariah Carey,’ ‘Emotions’ and ‘Music Box,’ she wasn’t a legacy artist just yet. But time would prove Mottola’s intuition correct. Carey’s 1994 ‘Merry Christmas’ album has become a seasonal mainstay and few holiday parties—or Billboard charts—would be right without it. Not bad for a rumored 15 minutes of work from the elusive chanteuse and the song’s co-writer, Walter Afanasieff.
